World Walker

It was a private beach. He unlaced his shoes, peeled off his socks, took it all in…. The sun was setting, the sky had that orange and pink hue as the sun was going down. What did it all mean, he wondered? The sand tickled his legs and the water was cool against his toes, creating small goose bumps to rise up on his skin. He liked her but he was afraid to take that next step. He leaned his head back, thumping it lightly against the base of the rock. The cool touch of the rock was soothing, washing away the heat of the day. Beyond, he could see the ocean go on forever. He could feel the pull. The need to loose himself in the chaos of deep blue sea. He grabbed his long board, and jogged to the edge of the surf. He inhaled, taking in a full lungful of the salty sea breeze. He walked farther out into the ocean and began to paddle. His arms burned at the effort…it felt good. He could feel his heart rate and breath speed up at the effort. As he got to his favorite spot, he sat up, looking out for a wave but it was flat like glass. Nothing was moving today…no chaos to drive away the pain.

She watched out there in the ocean. Just sitting there. She knew she should go out to him and explain. But what could she say. How could she tell him what was in her heart when she didn’t even know herself. It was a jumbled mess. She curled her toes in the white sand. “Go” she told herself. “Move your feet”. But her body resisted. So she stood there like a statue. Frozen in time. The sun finally set and darkness covered the world, folding her in its cool dark embrace. He would eventually forget her. She was okay with that. He would move on. She didn’t need to darken his doorstep and lead him into the mess of her world. She finally had enough courage to turn around. Her footstep were light, just like her father taught her. She didn’t make a sound. The earth seemed to respond to her request for silence. She made it to the stone just up ahead. It was a random circle of stones on the beach. Said to have been a gathering site for fairies or witches on All Hallows Eve. Others say the first ocean settlers brought them out from the depth of the ocean as offering to the gods for safe landing. But she knew the true story, for her family lineage was the owners of its powers. It was a veil between worlds. Between the stones were lay lines, lines of powerful magic that could transport one between worlds. She was a world walker.
